Family Members and their Two Cents!

We all know that planning weddings can bring out the best and the worst in people, especially those around us! Intruding family members can become a huge burden on a bride-to-be, which is the last thing they need when planning their wedding. However, there is a way to overcome a nosey mother-in-law or an interfering sister before packing your bags to elope!

Family members will always have their own opinions of what your wedding should be, and these will not always work with your view of your dream wedding. This will always result in a conflict where someone's feelings may get hurt or regrettable things may get said. Although your family members may only be trying to help you, they are unaware of the amount of stress you are under, and a small annoyance can become a major issue if not attended to properly.

In order to deal with intruding family members, you should consider the following three things:

  1. Be clear from the start of the level of involvement for family members with regards to the wedding. Make sure everyone around you knows what is expected, and most importantly, what is not.
  2. Discuss any issues you may be experiencing. Actually sitting down in a relaxed atmosphere will allow you and your family to communicate your issues and express your concerns without conflict or family fallouts. Remember that they love you. It is ok to speak up as long as it is done with respect.
  3. The most important thing to remember is - they are not getting married, you are! Be sure to tell family members that fact as although it may sound obvious, when a wedding is involved, people's judgment may become cloudy and autopilot may take over. Be sure to do it tactfully and not shout it out in a heated argument! Calming mention that this is what you had in mind for the big day and that you really appreciate the suggestions, but want to keep the vision in perspective.

How do you get along with your in-laws and your husband-to-be's family?
