Wedding Makeup Tips: How To Look Your Best

You are the star on your wedding day, the centre of attention with photos being taken left, right and centre. Your wedding makeup will take a knocking all day from being kissed, maybe some tears, chatting, laughing, eating and drinking so you need it to be long lasting – without looking caked on and unnatural. It’s a big task!

Splendor Makeup and Beauty have been helping brides and bridesmaids across the Hunter Valley, Central Coast and Newcastle look their best for over 13 years. Bianca, professional makeup artist and owner of Splendor, shared some of her wedding makeup tips for brides to be.

Prepare your skin for your wedding makeup

Rather than leaving your skin preparation until the week before, when new products and stress can result in sudden breakouts, it’s worth preparing several weeks in advance. Stay out of the sun and build a health tan slowly using fake tan. Keep hydrated, get plenty of sleep and eat well to achieve a healthy glow to your skin.

Research makeup styles

You’ve probably already looked through a thousand bridal pictures but it’s worth taking some time to research different bridal makeup. What a perfect excuse to sit with a cuppa and some fashion magazines! The more examples you can give your makeup artist of makeup you like, the better they will be able to create the perfect look for you and your bridal party.

Choose the right makeup products

Lightweight mineral makeup will ensure your bridal makeup doesn’t feel heavy and caked on. Bianca told us, “The mineral particles create a flawless finish to almost any skin type and have long lasting durability that means you still look fabulous at the end of the wedding reception.” Water resistant mascara and eyeliner is also a must just in case those tears start flowing!

Get a trial of your wedding makeup

If you are using a professional makeup artist, organise a wedding makeup trial 1-2 months before the big day, especially if you don’t usually wear a lot of makeup. It’s important to test the products well beforehand just in case your skin reacts and a trial will give your wedding makeup artist a feel for your skin tone and texture.

Splendor Makeup and Beauty sit down with every bride stepping through the kind of makeup usually worn, the kind of look the bride would like and the general theme of the wedding. “We also do a skin analysis to make sure we choose the most complimentary colours and products for each bride”, Bianca added.

Make sure you have some touch up makeup

Most wedding makeup trials will let you redeem the cost of the consultation in makeup products, which is an ideal way to make sure you have the same colours on hand for touch ups. Bianca told us that lipstick is especially important to have on hand but your wedding day touch up kit should also include lip liner, concealer and pressed powder.
